Tyme Regent-Bascombe is a Chartered Financial Planning Manager at Five Wealth, a Manchester-based financial planning organisation. Outside of work, Tyme plays semi-professional basketball.

1. What is your sporting background?

I have played national league basketball since I was 13. I attended Ipswich Basketball Academy for my A Levels and have played in various international tournaments as a junior basketball player.

2. Please can you tell us more about your role at Five Wealth?

I am a chartered financial planner. In short, I work with business owners and professionals, to help them structure and plan their finances, so they can spend more time on their passions and personal goals.

3. When and how did you blend your passion for sport with your career in finance?

I was fortunate to get a sports scholarship at Manchester Metropolitan University.  Throughout my time at university, I played Division 1 basketball for Manchester Magic, and I have continued to play at a similar level since graduating. This was especially helpful early in my finance career when I was studying to qualify as a financial planner. I made the decision not to go overseas to play basketball once I graduated from university, so that I could work alongside playing.

4. What advice would you give to professional athletes on how to protect their financial interests, both in the present and in the future?

Educate yourselves. This advice goes for anyone, not just athletes. If you read one personal finance book a year, before you know it your understanding of finance will be leaps and bounds ahead of your average person.

For those athletes who are high earners, it is important for you to spend the time building a team of professionals that you can trust. I cannot stress enough how important it is to take the time to vet professionals properly, especially financial planners. A good financial planner should be knowledgeable but also someone that has your best interests at heart.

5. What is one misconception in the sports industry?

One common misconception about athletes in the sports industry is that all professional athletes are ridiculously rich and overpaid. Most athletes will have a second career in a different industry following their athletic careers.

6. If you could change one thing in sport, what would it be?

This is something which has already started to change, but I would like to see more athletes taking ownership over their personal brand. A lot of young athletes would benefit from being introduced to a high-quality financial planner early in their careers. However, this ought to be a  financial planner that understands their journey and is willing to  take the time to educate, inform and coach the athletes as they grow and develop.

7. Please can you describe a typical day in your life?

As a financial planner, my days are varied. I am an early-riser, so typically I wake up between 5-6am depending on whether I am in the office. I do a general maintenance/stretching routine that I have been doing for years. I start working at 7.30am and aim to be out of the office by 4pm. On training days, I spend some time with the family (I have a toddler) before whisking off to practice at about 7pm – we typically train 8-10pm twice a week. On my off days, I try to fit a workout in. I am currently on home workouts as I adapt to having recently moved to the suburbs (these were previously gym days).
